The Pros and Cons of Plastic Surgery Essay - 723 Words
Society today has brain washed both men and women in believing that considered beautiful one must look like models shown on magazine, television and in movies. This causes people to undergo plastic surgery. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, plastic surgery was first used in India as early as 800 B.C. Not only does it enhance self-image but also self concept. Reconstructive ways has also been done nearly more to children than adults. Plastic surgerys categorized as either cosmetic or reconstructive surgery depending on the situation and image you want to portray but they both have their pros and cons. Studies show that 1684 [of] women [had] invasive breast cancer, 12.6% reported a first-degree relative with breast cancer (167). Not only does cosmetic breast surgery bring fiscal risks but so do the rest of the surgeries given. Other risks include scarring, nerve damage, blood clots, heart attack and even death. Therefore, improving your appearance can can cost not only money but also your life. Reconstructive surgerys performed to improve an abnormal feature due to trauma, birth defect, infection, tumors and diseases. This surgery helps many people of all ages and types whether its a child with a birth defect, an adult that was injury due to an accident or an older adult with aging problems. One of the most popular reconstructive surgery done in the year 2012 were tumor removal, statistics show that about 4.2 million people had this surgery done within that year (American Society of Plastic Surgeons). Tumor removal is a common thing for people to undergo reconstructive surgery but there are also other types of procedure done. Some other reconstructive rules include cleft lip, birth defect in the ear, hands, chest, limbs, injuries to the face, neck jaws hands, scars, birth marks, and reshaping the ear or chin.
